A few months ago I decided to take a closer look at Magpie, an advertising service which allows you to include ads in your twitter stream. At the time Aldon of Orient Lodge warned Magpie ads are intrusive and annoying, but I wanted to investigate for myself.Unfortunately most of the ads either looked spammy, or had been worded as though I endorsed the product. I didn't allow the ads through, instead hoping to earn a few dollars from affiliate sign-ups.
Then I discovered twitterfeed, a service which tweets your latest blog post. For some reason, Magpie hates twitterfeed and will suspend your account if your automatic tweets rise above 15%.
Over then next few weeks Magpie's bot automatically suspended then reinstated my account, prompting me to ask what gives them the right to dictate how I tweet and request my account to be deleted.
Magpie promptly ignored my request, but several weeks later I received notification my account has been terminated:
Dear John,
in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, we had to permanently terminate your Magpie account. Your remaining account balance has expired.
Reason: TERMINATED BY MAGPIE: Many of your tweets were posted in an automated manner, e.g. by aggregating RSS feeds.
